Wait and Wait with a Smile

Nobody likes to wait. Even the 30 seconds it takes to reheat our leftover dinner is too long. But as the saying goes, “Good things come to those who wait.” When my children and I are waiting for our name to be called at the doctor’s office, we find things to do to pass the time. Sometimes that means finding letters in a magazine or playing a game or singing a song or making up a story. It’s a fun time and actually creates special memories, albeit small. But if we just sat there, twiddling our thumbs, how much would we miss out on? Not to mention that the younger ones would be running around in circles while screaming and annoying other customers. I’d miss seeing how many letters my toddler can name; I’d miss hearing the sweet voice of my preschooler singing his ABCs. We could focus on just wanting to hear our name called so we could go back and get it over with already. We could “huff and puff” and watch the clock and complain and ask the receptionist if the doctor forgot about us. But then we’d miss out on the important things right in front of us.

When you’re waiting on your promise, don’t focus so much on the “end” goal that you miss out on what God has already blessed you with. Don’t forget the people He’s put in your path that need you. Don’t look past the promises He’s already fulfilled. Practice waiting patiently. The definition for PATIENT is bearing provocation, annoyance, misfortune, delay, hardship, pain, etc., with fortitude and calm and without complaint, anger, or the like. Wow, that’s a tall bill!! If you’re not focused on the delay, and instead on what’s right in front of you, your promise will be fulfilled in no time. Don’t watch the clock. The hands will tick by ever so slowly. If you’re so busy enjoying your blessings and blessing others, the hours will go by so fast that you’ll actually wish you had more time.

Do you have a testimony to share of a time when you were waiting on something and what you did to pass the time?

  1. One day after waiting for a promise to be fulfilled, my husband and I were sharing and rejoicing about the miracle that God had just done for us while we were driving in our car. We were in awe when to our surprise, unexpectedly, eagles soared in the air directly overhead of us. My husband turned to me and said, “They that wait upon the Lord, shall renew their strength.” 🙂
